Physician-driven 3T Radiology & Research is a leading medical imaging center in South Florida, known for combining advanced technology with a patient-first approach. That reputation attracted a surge in patient volume, and the practice began running into the ceiling that time-consuming MRI scans put on any imaging business.

Business hours stretched from 7 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week. Backlogs and wait times grew anyway. Long scans were uncomfortable for patients, which led to motion, rescans, and people opting out of longer examinations altogether. 3T needed a time-saving solution that would not compromise the image quality its name stands for.

3T evaluated deep learning reconstruction from OEMs and from other vendor-neutral providers before partnering with AIRS Medical in December 2023. SwiftMR offered the same deep learning capabilities as the OEM options at a fraction of the cost, worked on every scanner in the fleet regardless of vendor or age, and installed around 3T’s schedule. An OEM upgrade would have required lab downtime that would cut one to two days of profits.

SwiftMR was a fraction of the OEM price, plus the image quality and service it offered was significantly better than other vendor-neutral options in the market.

The team set five goals for the deployment and hit every one of them within the first two months.

3T’s goals, and what SwiftMR delivered

We were able to accomplish all of the goals we set with SwiftMR within the first two months of installation: increasing throughput, reducing business hours and backlogs, and improving the patient’s overall experience.

Comparing January and February 2024 against the same two months a year earlier, scan volume rose from 1,042 to 1,475 studies. The additional capacity generated $205,567 in extra revenue in the first two months, a 2,495% return on the investment in SwiftMR.

The capacity gain ran in the other direction too. Instead of stretching the schedule further, 3T shortened it: business hours fell by 22 per week and the center now closes fully on Sundays, giving time back to its MRI technologists while scanning more patients than before.

For co-founder Humberto Carrion, the change showed up directly on the bottom line. “From a financial standpoint, the return on investment has been fantastic,” he said. “SwiftMR has allowed us to increase our margins significantly with reduced hours and more scans per day.”

Faster acquisitions compounded through the whole patient experience. Appointment slots for non-contrast studies fell from 30 to 15 minutes, and contrast studies from 45 to 30 minutes. The wait for a non-contrast appointment dropped from five days to one, and for contrast studies from two weeks to five days. The center can now take walk-ins.

Shorter time in the bore also meant fewer repeat scans, easier examinations for patients with claustrophobia, and a more comfortable experience for anyone facing a long study.

Across the protocols 3T measured, total acquisition time fell by roughly a third to nearly half, with the largest savings on the examinations that dominate an outpatient schedule: spines, shoulders and knees.

The speed did not come at the cost of reading confidence. For Dr. Daryl Eber, the practice’s head radiologist, the reconstructed images were easier to read than the originals.

With SwiftMR proven across its standard MRI services, 3T turned to a second ambition. Demand for whole-body MRI screening was growing, and the practice saw a service aligned with its mission of empowering patients through proactive care. “We saw whole-body MRI as a way for patients to take total control of their health,” said co-founder Humberto Carrion.

3T first partnered with a third-party whole-body MRI vendor, and the experience fell short for both patients and providers. The vendor controlled scheduling, so cancellations and reschedules went unseen and open slots delayed care for 3T’s regular patients. One-size-fits-all protocols ignored body shape and medical history, limiting image quality. The vendor took its share of the profits while 3T carried all of the reputational and clinical risk, and the absence of follow-up care left patients uncertain about next steps.

So 3T made the strategic decision to bring whole-body MRI in-house, extending SwiftMR to support it. With SwiftMR-accelerated protocols designed by its own team, a whole-body examination takes about one hour, followed by an on-site radiologist consultation the same day. The same visit acquires roughly twice the images of the outsourced service, and 3T retains 100% of the revenue.

Third-party scheduling didn’t meet our expectations. Patients sometimes wouldn’t show up. It would delay care for our regular patients.

Whole-body MRI is only as powerful as the images it produces, and 3T found third-party scans often fell short, with critical regions missed and inconsistent quality. With protocols built in-house and SwiftMR enhancing fine detail, 3T’s radiologists could detect abnormalities in asymptomatic patients, validate concerns, and rule out risks with greater confidence.

For 3T, whole-body MRI is not just a technological advancement. It is a service designed to empower patients, whether by validating concerns or simply providing relief, and two early cases show what that looks like in practice.

One scan detected a silent danger. A healthy, asymptomatic patient scheduled an appointment out of an abundance of caution. “She had no reason to go get an MRI,” reflected Dr. Eber. During the scan he identified a mass in the brain, a slow-growing malignancy that would have gone unnoticed without early imaging.

Another found a long-sought answer. A patient presented with enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. “At first, I thought this could be lymphoma,” said Dr. Eber. Further testing instead revealed advanced sarcoidosis. “They were tired and never understood why. They thought they were just getting older.”

SwiftMR changed 3T’s core business first: 42% more scans, $205,567 in additional revenue within two months, 22 fewer business hours a week, and 10 more patients served each day. Then it made a second business possible, turning whole-body MRI from an outsourced compromise into a premium in-house service with full control of scheduling, protocols, and the patient relationship.
