How OrthoSouth scanned 200 more patients in the first month with SwiftMR® without adding staff or new hardware

OrthoSouth serves the greater Memphis community.

Growth was capped by an aging scanner.

After one day: ahead of schedule. After one month: 200+ more patients.

Average 33% reduction in scan time.

SwiftMR benefited every stakeholder.

With 15 locations across Tennessee and Mississippi, OrthoSouth covers specialties from sports medicine to joint replacement, anchored by a dedicated Spine Institute and in-house MRI services.

OrthoSouth's Philips Ingenia 1.5T was running 30-minute scan protocols, limiting busy days to 15–17 patients per scanner. The team was planning to replace the scanner eventually, but wanted to explore ways to get faster scans without compromising quality.

SwiftMR fit the brief: AI software that runs on existing MRI hardware, with no new equipment to install and no new sequences for the radiologists or technologists to learn. Before going live, OrthoSouth led a careful review that involved their spine surgeons, neuroradiologist, and four medical directors. Everyone agreed the quality held up, and the CEO signed off.

The impact was immediate. On day one, OrthoSouth finished its scheduled patients ahead of time. By day two, the staff was adding on additional patients.

Within a month, standard appointment slots were moving from 30 minutes to 20, allowing OrthoSouth to scan five to seven more patients per day. The time savings also funded a 40-minute protected lunch and two 20-minute stat slots per scanner per day, so the schedule got better even as volume grew.

Image quality held up in real practice, too. Surgeons who used to direct certain cases to the practice's newer scanner stopped doing so. In the months following rollout, the team has raised zero image-quality complaints on the Philips with SwiftMR.

Selected times from 30 protocols on the Philips Ingenia 1.5T.

Results will vary by scanner model, field strength, pulse sequence, and clinical protocol.

Patients with claustrophobia or in acute pain who used to abandon 30-minute exams now complete their scans on schedule. Cancellations and re-routing are down.

Surgeons need consistent image quality across both MRI sites. With SwiftMR enabling that on the Philips, OrthoSouth's schedulers can route cases by availability rather than scanner preference.

Technologists had their schedules unchanged. No new hires, no overtime added. The team is scanning more patients per shift and getting more flexibility and time for breaks.

OrthoSouth scanned 200+ more patients in the first month of SwiftMR, lifted per-scanner throughput by roughly 40%, and gained two to three years of capital flexibility, all on the same team and the same hardware. Talk to AIRS Medical about what SwiftMR could do on your existing scanners.

SwiftMR® is FDA 510(k) cleared as an AI-powered MRI image enhancement solution intended for noise reduction and increased image sharpness on non-contrast enhanced MRI images in DICOM format. Supported body parts, pulse sequences, field strengths, patient populations, and MRI manufacturers may vary by country.

Scan-time and throughput results shown reflect OrthoSouth’s experience on a Philips Ingenia 1.5T system. Outcomes vary by scanner model, field strength, pulse sequence, clinical protocol, and operational baseline; individual practices should not expect identical results. Actual scan time varies by scanner model, sequence, and clinical protocol. For investigational purposes only for scan-time reduction over 50%.

“We could prolong the life of the Philips, improve the image quality, and get the scan time down.”
“The feedback I’m getting from my staff is much better, much better.”
“Shorter scan times have truly changed the experience for many of our patients, especially those who are anxious or unable to hold still. Pairing that with improved image quality has been incredibly impactful.”
